Tasty Treat Tuesday: Liver Paste

I'm a member of several different Facebook groups that deal with dog training and one of them has a number of members from the UK. Using "liver paste" comes up regularly in that group, with many folks touting how much their dogs LOVE it.....so I had to give it a try!

Liver Paste

1/2 pound chicken or beef livers

1 Tbsp butter

1 Tbsp chopped rosemary

1 Tbsp chopped parsley

1 egg, hard-boiled

1 tsp garlic granules or powder

Sauté livers in the butter until browned thoroughly on all sides. Transfer to food processor, add remaining ingredients and blend together until smooth.

So, now that you have this wonderfully smelly, sticky "liver paté", what in the heck do you do with it?  The easiest way to serve it to your dog is to get a glob of it on your finger and let them lick it off...kind of gross and messy, but very "bonding"!  Other serving options include:

  • Put the paste in a tube, squeeze out a dab and let your dog lick it off from there. I tried a refillable plastic container that I had for decorating with frosting, but you can also buy "dog training food tubes" that can be filled from the bottom, clamped and have a screw-on cap for storage.

  • Use the paste for Kong-stuffing, mixing it with kibble or veggies such as carrots or green beans

  • Add a dab or two of the paste to your dog's regular food as a special treat

  • Dip a boring dog biscuit into the paste to give it a boost in appeal

So there you have it - a unique and very appetizing (to dogs) treat that takes just a few minutes to prepare and will have your dog literally eating from your hand!

Storage: Store in a closed container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.

Cost: About $2.00

Calories: Total recipe = 600; per "dab" maybe 5-10??
